Marseille -
What To See
|
|
Perched up on a hill, the Cours Julien is Marseille's hippest district. Beloved of the "bo-bo" (bourgeois-bohemian) community, it teems with cafés, restaurants, theatres and cutting edge shops. But one of its most striking features is the street art: not just graffiti (though there's plenty of that too) but the extraordinary, colourful, hand-painted façades.

For more information on events and the happening venues in the Cours Ju, as locals call it (the place Jean Jaurès at the top of the hill is also sometimes referred to as La Plaine), check the local association website and the excellent, bi-lingual (English and French) guide by Kim Sapriel, a long-time local resident, as well as our own guide to visiting the Cours Julien with young children. Meanwhile, enjoy this gallery of images snapped on a mellow early autumn afternoon.
How to get there: Metro (line 2, direction Sainte Marguerite Dromel; stop Notre Dame du Mont).
